Fabric design process: Santorini

My entry to this week’s Spoonflower design challenge is directly inspired by an original vintage  skirt I saw on Pinterest and the Greek island of Santorini. I liked the clean, geometric feel and decided to play with a version based on Santorini's architecture.

Using the skirt as inspiration, and referencing photographs of Santorini, I sketched out an outline of a single pattern repeat. I often start a design directly in my graphics program (currently Adobe Illustrator), but on one or two occasions recently I've used pencil sketches to map out the initial concept for a design.

I kept fairly faithfully to the overall look and feel of the original, adapting it to reference Santorini's iconic blue domed roofs and white and pastel-toned architecture.

The final design

This print is now available to purchase on Spoonflower. I’ve also made a border print version that will print along the length of the fabric, suitable for gathered or pleated full skirts.
