Tutorial: How to Make a Heart-Shaped Beret

Heart_shaped_Beret_Tutorial.jpg

I shared this tutorial on Instagram earlier this year, but now that beret season has rolled around again I thought I would repost it here so it’s easy to save/pin for reference.

Start with a regular round beret - choose a heavily felted one in 100% wool for the best results as it needs to have a bit of stiffness to hold the heart shape. Mine is from Accessorize.

First, Turn the beret inside out and outline the heart shape - you can use a disappearing ink pen, chalk or pins to mark, then hand baste the outline:

Machine stitch all the way around your heart shape (if you don’t have a sewing machine you can hand stitch - it won’t be as strong but it should hold up fine as long as you treat it with care). Then cut away the seam allowance close to the stitching line (the felted wool won’t fray, don’t worry). Clip to the centre of the V-shape at the top of the heart right up to the stitching line but being careful not to actually cut through the thread.

Turn the beret the right way round and steam press with a warm iron.

This beret looks best worn perched quite far back, so I attached a hair comb to the inside of the top brim to help secure it to the head without slipping.

And you’re all set! Don’t forget to pin this post for future reference, and do tag me on twitter or instagram if you try this tutorial - I’d love to see your creations!
